TORONTO, Ont - The Fanshawe Falcons defeated the three-time defending OCAA Champion Algonquin Thunder 2-0 to open the 2018 belairdirect OCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
Jade Kovacevic, the 2018 OCAA Women's Soccer Player of the Year, netted both goals for the Falcons as they ended Algonquin's five-year run of appearing in the championship match.
Kovacevic opened the scoring in the 15th minute. The Falcons earned a free kick from 30 yards out. The kick went into the box, was knocked down by a Falcons player before squirting out of a scramble where Kovacevic was waiting without a Thunder defender in site. The OCAA Scoring Champion calmly found the back of the net before sprinting to the Fanshawe bench in celebration.
With the Thunder looking for the equalizer, Kovacevic struck again in the 80th minute. A kick from the Falcons goalkeeper landed 10 yards beyond midfield, took a big bounce off the cold turf and came down just outside the 18 yard box. It was there that Kovacevic beat the Thunder defender, knocking the ball down with her chest and putting it past the Thunder goalkeeper.
The win put the Falcons into the semi-final tomorrow at 4:00pm. The Thunder move on to the consolation side of the bracket at 10:00am.
Kovacevic was named Player of the Game for the Falcons while Hailey Martin took the honours for the Thunder.
