HUMBER TWICE GOLDEN AT OCAA INDOOR SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS

ANCASTER, Ont. - The Humber Hawks are twice golden at the 2018 OCAA Indoor Soccer Championships, hosted by Redeemer University College in Ancaster, Ont. The championships, presented by belairdirect, concluded Saturday after three days of play and over 45 matches.

After a grueling tournament, the Hawks outlasted all other challengers to secure the 2018 championship titles. Both the Hawks men's and women's teams, held their opponents scoreless in their respective final matches to earn gold.

In the women's final, the defending OCAA champion Hawks knocked off the 2016 champion Seneca Sting 3-0.

The Hawks advanced to the gold medal match with a 3-0 victory over the Sheridan Bruins in the semi-finals. The Sting punched their ticket to the final with a 1-0 win in overtime against the eventual bronze medalist Fanshawe Falcons.

For her stellar play, Rebecca Spratt from Humber was named the Championship MVP. Spratt scored in the gold medal match as well as the team's semi-final game. Humber's goalie Vanessa Fiore was named the Championship's Top Goalkeeper.

Shaniece Bennett rounded out the championship awards for the Hawks, being named an OCAA All-Star. Chantel Cifuentes and Victoria Harvey from Seneca, Alex Clements from the Falcons, and Marianna DeFina from the Bruins were also named Championship All-Stars.

The Hawks finished the three-day event with a 5-0-1 record.

In the men's final, the Hawks defeated the defending champion George Brown Huskies 1-0. A first-half goal on a free kick by Bradley Fenton was the difference as the Hawks locked down the Huskies in the second half.

The Hawks finished the championship with a 4-1-1 record.

Humber advanced to the championship final after a 2-1 victory over the UTM Eagles. George Brown made it to the final after defeating the Seneca Sting in overtime 2-1.

Jamie Scott was named a Championship All-Star for the Hawks while Humber's goalie, Eugenio Garro was named the Top Goalkeeper, and Bradley Fenton was named the Championship MVP.

Rounding out the All-Star awards were Jesse Oliver and Shaquille Agard from the silver medalist George Brown Huskies, Zimba Galloway from the bronze medalist UTM Eagles, and Mark Misic from the Seneca Sting.

UTM captured its first indoor soccer medal since joining the OCAA, winning the bronze medal 4-0 over the Seneca Sting.
