WINDSOR, Ont. - Fanshawe College's Chuot Angou (London, Ont.) was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Basketball Player of the Year for the second year in a row in a ceremony held in Windsor, Ont., on Wednesday evening as part of the 2020 OCAA Women's Basketball Championship.
The fifth-year guard averaged 18.4 points per game in 18 games, setting a new regular season record for free thrown proficiency shooting 60-of-67 from the charity stripe for a success rate of 89.6 per cent. Angou also contributed 55 rebounds, 50 assists, 36 steals and five blocks. Also named West Division Player of the Year, Angou is a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian and headlines the West Division First-Team All-Stars.
Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) of Durham is the East Division Player of the Year. The first-year guard had a debut to remember. Oliver led the OCAA with 198 total rebounds, and her 19.4 points per game average put her third among all OCAA players. She also accumulated 52 steals, 32 assists and nine blocks to her totals. Oliver was also named a CCAA All-Canadian, OCAA Rookie of the Year, East Division Rookie of the Year, a member of the East Division First-Team All-Stars as well as the East Division All-Rookie Team.
Algonquin's Jaime McLean is the OCAA nominee for CCAA Coach of the Year. The East Division Coach of the Year led his Thunder to a near-perfect record of 15-1, winning the East Division championship. Algonquin was third in OCAA offence averaging 77.8 points per game while allowing a second-fewest total of 56.7 points against per game.
Jade Addai (United Kingdom) of U of T Mississauga is the OCAA Scoring Champion. The second-year guard averaged 22.4 points over 16 regular season games. Addai was second in the league scoring 358 total points, and was second in shooting efficiency as she shot 55.6 per cent on 138-of-248 attempts. The East Division Scoring Champion is also an East Division First-Team All-Star.
Lambton's Breanna Pretty (Sarnia, Ont.) is the West Division Rookie of the Year. The guard was second among all OCAA players with 67 steals. She also contributed 13.1 points per game, 158 rebounds and 49 assists. Pretty headlines the West Division All-Rookie Team.
Bill Carriere of Fanshawe is the West Division Coach of the Year. Carriere led the Falcons to an impressive regular season mark of 17-1, sharing the top record in the West Division, but losing the West Division championship tiebreaker to Humber. Fanshawe was the top offensive team in the OCAA averaging 82.8 points per game.
The West Division Scoring Champion was Sam Pocrnic (Oakville, Ont.) of Mohawk. The fourth-year guard averaged 21.9 points per game, joining Addai as the only two OCAA players to average better than 20 points. Pocrnic's 394 total points led the OCAA. Pocrnic is also a West Division First-Team All-Star.
Akashia Moore Samuels (Milton, Ont.) of U of T Mississauga is the East Division Defensive Player of the Year. The third-year guard was second among OCAA players with 67 steals. She also contributed 48 defensive rebounds and six blocks.
Fanshawe's Mikhaila Wright (London, Ont.) is the West Division Defensive Player of the Year. The fifth-year guard was second among OCAA student-athletes with 120 defensive rebounds. She also tallied 31 steals and 14 blocks. Wright was also named a West Division First-Team All-Star.
Named West Division First-Team All-Stars along with Angou, Pocrnic and Wright were Humber's Miea Campbell-Johnson (Brampton, Ont.); and St. Clair's Logan Kucera (Chatham, Ont.).
Joining Oliver and Addai as East Division First-Team All-Stars are Algonquin's Michaela Branker (Ottawa, Ont.) and Rita Sibo (Gatineau, Que.); and George Brown's Zae Sellers (Minneapolis, Minn.).
The five student-athletes that make up the West Division Second-Team All-Stars are Humber's Jahnae Gyles (Port Credit, Ont.); Lambton's Cassidy Crowe (Sarnia, Ont.); Redeemer's Jessica Angelini (Hamilton, Ont.); St. Clair's Jana Kucera (Chatham, Ont.); and Sheridan's Theresa Brown (Brampton, Ont.).
East Division Second-Team All-Stars include Centennial's Cori Browne (Toronto, Ont.); Durham's Emily Glendinning (Plattsville); George Brown's Victoria Lawrence (Ottawa, Ont.); Loyalist's Brittany Mason (Ottawa, Ont.); and St. Lawrence's Kylie Moyer (Bloomfield, Ont.).
In addition to Oliver, members of the East Division All-Rookie Team include Centennial's Beyonce Hosang (Brampton, Ont.); Durham's Sierra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.); George Brown's Kayana Granger (Toronto, Ont.); and U of T Mississauga's Avery Torok (Markham, Ont.).
Joining Pretty as members of the West Division All-Rookie Team are Humber's Kia Watt (Toronto, Ont.); Mohawk's Grace Mahler (Hamilton, Ont.); Niagara's Terin Hultink (Fenwick, Ont.); and Sheridan's Laura Jareckas (Mississauga, Ont.).
