TORONTO, Ont - The Algonquin Thunder advanced to the Consolation Championship with a 3-0 win over the Niagara Knights.
The three-time defending OCAA Champion Algonquin Thunder saw their hopes for a four-peat dashed in the quarter-final, but it didn't show this afternoon. The Thunder opened the scoring in the 28th minute. Samantha Moore-Caesar stole the ball from the Knights midfielder, gently passed the ball ahead to Melissa Scissons who then crossed it to Victoria Trimble for the game's opening score.
The Thunder added to their lead in the 60th minute when Victoria Davis headed home a free kick from the bottom of the midfield circle.
With the game decided, the Thunder were awarded a penalty kick in injury time which Sarah Ouellette converted following a foul on Niagara's goalkeeper Alexis Hebert.
The win puts the Thunder into the Consolation Championship tomorrow at 9:00am against the St. Clair Saints. The Knights saw their season come to an end.
Trimble was named Player of the Game for the Thunder while Sophia Al-Kayed took the honours for the Knights.
