Day Two of the 2018 belairdirect OCAA Women’s Volleyball Championships was underway as the first game of the consolation round featured a West-East battle between the second seeded Fanshawe Falcons of the OCAA West and the top seeded Loyalist Lancers of the OCAA East.
Fanshawe had set point at 24-23 during the third set with a chance to sweep the Niagara Knights but a miscommunication from Lindsay Wilcox and Katie Stewart sparked the Knights to three straight points to take the third set.
Niagara then came all the way back as Fanshawe was beaten in five sets (25-18, 25-17, 24-26, 24-26, 10-15), despite outpacing the Knights in almost every stat. Meghan Morelli led the Falcons with a game high 20 points on 17 kills and was named Fanshawe’s Player of the Game.
For Loyalist, despite coming into provincials with a 16-2 record, they could not get the job done against the Sheridan Bruins as they were upset in four sets (17-25, 25-16, 23-25, 24-26).
Aside from a 6-5 edge in blocks and Sheridan committing 10 more attack errors (23-13), Loyalist was outclassed in every other stat. Sara Piana Yafu led all scorers with 15 points on 13 kills and was named the Lancers’ Player of the Game.
After an eventful first day of action which was filled with surprise victories, this match was anticlimactic, to say the least, as the Falcons beat the Lancers in straight sets (25-23, 25-20, 27-25).
Fanshawe now advances to the consolation final in a battle for fifth place against the winner of the second consolation match between the Mohawk Mountaineers and the Centennial Colts. For Loyalist, however, their season has come to an end.
Darian Gropp dished out a game high 32 assists and was named Fanshawe's Player of the Game while Alicia Orsborne was named Loyalist’s Player of the Game.
Meghan Morelli and Katie Stewart each led the Falcons with 12 points while Sara Piana Yafu ended her Lancers career with a game high 14 points in defeat. The Falcons had the Lancers beat handily in kills (41-28) and assists (39-24).
Fanshawe started off strong, using a 4-0 run to take an early 9-4 lead in the first set. But the Lancers began to chip away at the Falcons’ lead and an attack error from Katie Stewart gave Loyalist their first lead of the set at 21-20.
The set was tied at 23 after a service error from the Falcons but Fanshawe had two consecutive kills, the last one coming from Jaime McKee as they took the first set, 25-23. Stewart had five kills in the set alone.
After an attack error from McKee cut the Falcons lead to one (9-8), Fanshawe broke the second set open on a 13-6 run, capped off by a kill and ace from Meghan Morelli, to lead 22-14. A kill from McKee wrapped up the second set, 25-20, in favour of Fanshawe.
The Falcons, determined not to repeat yesterday's showing, jumped out to a 7-4 lead and held that margin, leading 19-16 late in the third set as the Lancers were forced to call timeout.
Loyalist had cut it to one on three opportunities but couldn't push the tying point through or take the lead. On their fourth attempt, however, facing set point, Yafu hit one of her six third set kills and an ace to give Loyalist their first set point.
But Fanshawe was not to be denied this time around as they scored three straight points to end the match, winning the third set, 27-25.
