Mohawk wins second straight defeating Fanshawe in the Consolation Final

The third and final day of the 2018 belairdirect OCAA Women’s Volleyball Championships began with an afternoon showdown between the Mohawk Mountaineers and the Fanshawe Falcons.

Both teams lost in the quarterfinals in heartbreaking fashion, as the Mountaineers and Falcons each fell in five sets after blowing a two-set lead. However, in yesterday’s consolation matches, they both got the job done.

Fanshawe beat the Loyalist Lancers in straight sets (25-23, 25-20, 27-25), led by 12 points each from Meghan Morelli and Katie Stewart while Darian Gropp’s game-high 32 assists got her the Player of the Game for the Falcons.

Mohawk also took care of business in straight sets against the host Centennial Colts (25-21, 25-19, 25-13) as they were led by Danielle Kamps, who had a game-high 13 points in the win.

Amanda Kuiper dished out a game-high 30 assists while Kelsey Kovar had a game-high six aces and Jennifer Heidbuurt, who was named the Mountaineers’ Player of the Game, had 12 points.

The Mountaineers continued their dominance since the quarterfinals, dispatching the Falcons in straight sets (25-22, 25-20, 25-22).

With the win, Mohawk finishes the OCAA Championships in fifth place while Fanshawe places sixth. The Mountaineers had the edge in kills (38-28), assists (36-28), aces (6-4), blocks (8-5), and digs (37-33).

Kamps was named Player of the Game for the Mountaineers after scoring a game-high 14 points on 10 kills, an ace and three blocks. Kuiper had a game-high 34 assists while Kovar had nine digs.

Morelli led the Falcons with 10 points while Tarea Heshka was named Fanshawe's Player of the Game.

Kuiper’s service game gave the Mountaineers three straight points to start off the set but Fanshawe came roaring back and went up by as many as three (17-14) as Mattea Deleary had four kills alone during that span. But Mohawk went on an 11-5 run to close out the set as they took the first set, 25-22. Kamps had five kills during that set alone.

Mohawk used a 7-0 run early in the second set to take a 9-1 lead and maintained their lead at 24-17. And although Fanshawe made it interesting with three straight points, the Mountaineers eventually scored the last point to take the second set, 25-20.

Determined not to get swept, Fanshawe took an early lead in the third set, going up 11-8, but Mohawk eventually tied the set and it continued to be tied (20-20).

The Mountaineers scored three in a row, followed by consecutive points from the Falcons as each team burned a timeout. But kills from Lindsay Vanderweide and Heidbuurt ended the match as Mohawk took the third set, 25-22.
